Review: A Course Called Ireland

Bad sports books include a lot of sports, good sports book include a lot of other stuff. Tom Coyne’s book contains the right amount of other stuff. The subtitle is: A Long Walk in Search of a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee. Coyne decided one day (one assumes after a few pints) to walk the perimeter of Ireland playing the golf courses, enjoying the countryside and connecting with the people along the way.

With scant golfing equipment and scanter personal supplies carried on his back along narrow roads, this is a grand story of adjustment to snarling dogs, hard rain, hard to find golf courses and hard drinking new friends. Since I couldn’t do it, I’m glad Coyne did, and told us about it.
