Anyone seeking to learn more about ecology would do well to read Curt Stager’s Still Waters. We are taken to lakes small, Walden Pond, to large, Lake Victoria and to dead ones, the Dead Sea.
I wanted to learn more about ecology on a small scale, how fish are affected by change for example and how man is doing the affecting. In clear words and ideas, Stager teaches what we need to know. There is a lot of science interspersed with human interest stories; such as competition between American and Russian team leaders and the competition between hungry crocodiles and meaty researches in a collapsed boat.
Still Waters tells the small story and helps us understand the big picture.
